Daffodil Days Blooming Success

Brendan Kearns, of Deer Park, and his mom receive a "gift of hope," a bunch of freshly cut daffodils in an engraved vase,  during the American Cancer Society's Daffodil Days. 1,400 "gifts of hope" were purchased by  Long Islanders and sent to area hospital and health related facilities, including Winthrop University Hospital's Cancer Center for Kids.

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY DAFFODIL DAYS
RAISES $ 316,000 TO HELP REDUCE
LONG ISLAND'S BURDEN OF CANCER

Daffodils, the symbol of hope to cancer survivors, bloomed across Long Island. Our generous community raised more than $316,000 for cancer research, education programs and support services for cancer survivors and their families. During the week of March 18th, hundreds of thousands of daffodils were delivered by Fed-Ex throughout Long Island.

"Thanks to community support we are able to fund lifesaving cancer research; offer hope to men, women and children facing cancer; and help increase cancer survivorship and quality of life for cancer patients," said Dee McCabe, Nassau County Regional Executive for the American Cancer Society. "I would like to personally thank everyone who purchased daffodils or volunteered their time to help deliver them."

"We are very proud to say that Long Island residents bought 1,400 Gifts of Hope that were delivered to area hospitals to help brighten the rooms and spirits of patients," said Anne LaSalle, Suffolk County Regional Executive for the American Cancer Society.

Every dollar raised during the American Cancer Society's Daffodil Days goes toward fighting cancer on Long Island for:

  • Research. More than $100 million each year ? with $38 million currently at work in New York and New Jersey.

  • Education. Cancer prevention guidelines for breast, colorectal and prostate cancer are the standard used by health professionals and lay people alike.

  • Advocacy. Changing public policies to extend insurance coverage for mammograms or to advocate for clean indoor air are some of what we're working on.

  • Patient & Family Services. Community-based support and counseling services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 1-800-ACS-2345 or www.cancer.org.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and patient and family services.  For more information, call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345 or visit www.cancer.org.
