In
the first Relay For Life event ever held in Center Moriches, more than
1,000 participants raised more than $86,000 to support American Cancer
Society cancer research, education, advocacy and patient and family
service programs at Center Moriches High School on May 17 and 18.
The overnight celebration also raised public awareness about cancer and
celebrated survivors who have triumphed over cancer.
A group of
100 cancer survivors kicked off the festivities by taking a "survivor
lap" to the cheers and applause of the crowd. Members of the 60
teams at Center Moriches High School then began taking turns walking,
jogging or running laps around the track throughout the night and morning.
At
nightfall, dozens of luminary candles placed around the track were lit in
a touching ceremony to honor cancer survivors and those who have lost
their battles with the disease. Speakers at the kickoff included:
event chair, Miriam Gillies; cancer survivors; Mary Goodenough and Diane
Nannery Sackett and Linda Jasper, Immediate past president of the ACS
Eastern Division.
There are
five more Relays on LI between now and July. To get involved, contact the
American Cancer Society at 800-ACS-2345 or www.cancer.org
