TO HELP REDUCE BURDEN OF CANCER

Daffodils, the symbol of hope to cancer survivors and their families, bloomed across Suffolk County the week of March 26th.  More than $200,000 was raised for cancer research, educational programs and support services for cancer survivors.

“Thanks to community support, the American Cancer Society is able to fund lifesaving cancer research, offer hope to people with cancer through numerous support programs, and send kids with the disease to Camp Adventure for a week with their siblings,” said Anne LaSalle, Suffolk County Regional Executive, the American Cancer Society.  “I would like to personally thank everyone who purchased daffodils or helped to deliver them, especially Fed Ex..”

This year, through a partnership with Fed Ex, cases of flowers were shipped overnight, free of change, to hundreds of businesses, schools and organizations across the county.  Dozens of Fed Ex volunteers, on their own time, helped the American Cancer Society pack up and label the orders for delivery.

For the first time, this year, Long Islanders were able to purchase “Gifts of Hope,” vases filled with daffodils, which were donated to local hospitals.  The American Cancer Society was able to brighten two Suffolk hospitals with more than 800 of those “gifts.”

Every dollar raised through the American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days goes to fight cancer in Suffolk with:

  • Research - More than $100 million in grants are given by the American Cancer Society each year, with more than $35 million for New York and New Jersey alone.

  • Education - Cancer prevention guidelines for breast, colorectal and prostate cancer are the standards used by health professionals.

  • Advocacy - The American Cancer Society lobbies to change public policies in extending insurance coverage for mammograms or to reduce youth access to tobacco products.

  • Patient Services -The American Cancer Society offers numerous community-based support and counseling programs for people who have been diagnosed with cancer. Our hotline, 1-800-ACS-2345 is accessible 24-hours a day, 365 days a year.  Trained representatives are available to offer information and referrals.
