Become A Puppy Walker!

Are you a dog lover?  Do you enjoy helping others?  If so, then the Guide Dog Foundation "Puppy Walker" program may be perfect for you!

The Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, based in Smithtown, is looking for families who are willing to help a Labrador or Golden Retriever puppy pursue a most important career.

When these dogs, who are bred and born at the Foundation, are about 14 months old, they begin training as a guide dog for a person who is blind or visually impaired. Their services are in demand - there are many blind people across the country who need a guide dog to increase their independence and mobility.

But until the dogs are old enough to begin training, they need a loving home, with kind people who will teach them good manners and show them how to act around other people. Those who care for guide dog puppies during their first year of life are called "Puppy Walkers."

Won't you open your heart and your home to help the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind provide guiding eyes for a blind individual? Call Erin Cleary, Puppy Program Coordinator, at (800) 548-4337 ext. 260, to learn more.

Just like this one - this is Nat.  She is now all grown and receiving her final training to become a working Guide Dog at the Smithtown facility. Nat is a Labrador Retriever and was raised by Nancy Bock, co-founder of SuffolkJournal.com.  Throughout her puppy months, Nat accompanied Nancy to press conferences, meetings and events all across Suffolk County in preparation for her future career.
