STONY BROOK, NY  – Henry H. Woo, M.D., a cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgeon, has been appointed Director of the newly established Cerebrovascular Center at Stony Brook University Medical Center (SBUMC), announced Richard N. Fine, M.D., Dean of the School of Medicine.  Dr. Woo holds dual appointments in both the Neurosurgery and Radiology Departments at SBUMC.

Dr. Woo (pictured at right) brings a new area of expertise to Stony Brook for patients requiring treatment for cerebral aneurysms; endovascular management of acute stroke; and surgical, endovascular and radiosurgical treatment of cerebral arteriovenous malformations, spinal arteriovenous malformations and fistulas, dural arteriovenous fistulas, and carotid and intracranial atherosclerosis.

“Dr. Woo is a world expert on the treatment of aneurysms and vascular malformations of the central nervous system,” says Raphael Davis, M.D., Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery.  “As a neurosurgeon and neurointerventionalist, he offers a unique expertise in dealing with these complex neurosurgical problems.  He is a welcome addition to our department.”

“Having Dr. Woo as part of the Radiology faculty improves our diagnostic capabilities for stroke and other major cerebrovascular diseases,” says Donald Harrington, M.D., Chief of Radiology.  “His expertise can be applied to a number of specialties, and this will be beneficial to many patients.”

Dr. Woo says the field of interventional neuroradiology is quickly evolving, just as interventional cardiology did over the past 15 years.  He says patients will benefit greatly from advancing technologies.

“The Cerebrovascular Center will grow as the field continues to progress, offering Long Islanders the most advanced and newest technology to treat cerebrovascular disease,” says Dr. Woo.

Dr. Woo will also join the clinical team for the Stroke Program.  His appointment is a significant step to creating a comprehensive stroke treatment center at the Medical Center.  The Stroke Program is the only Joint Commission certified Primary Stroke Center on Long Island.  The program is also certified by the New York State Department of Health.

“The appointment of Dr. Woo helps bring world class quality neurovascular care to the community, and as a result we are able to offer minimally invasive procedures to our patients where it was not previously available in Suffolk County,” adds Steven L. Strongwater, M.D., CEO of the Medical Center.

Before coming to SBUMC, Dr. Woo practiced for five years at the Cleveland Clinic Neurological Institute’s Cerebrovascular Center in Ohio. He graduated Alpha Omega Alpha from New York University School of Medicine. He also completed his residency in Neurosurgery and a fellowship in Interventional Neuroradiology at NYU Medical Center.

Dr. Woo’s professional memberships include the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the American Society of Interterventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the AANS/CNS Section of Cerebrovascular Surgery and the World Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology. He has published widely and in journals such as Neurosurgery, Stroke, Journal of Neurosurgery, American Journal of Neuroradiology, Contemporary Neurosurgery and Critical Care Medicine.

Born in Korea and raised in New York City, Dr. Woo now lives in Setauket with his wife, Eydie, and their three young children, Kate (6), Jack (4), and Caroline (2).
