All Star Game |

February 1, 2002 (updated June 20, 2002 Atlantic League All-Star Game Comes to LI
The best players of the Atlantic League will play at Citibank Park on July 10, the first time the event has been held in Suffolk. After only two seasons of play, the LI Ducks have attracted dedicated fans who pack the stadium for all home games. As their third season is getting underway, the team was honored by the league by having their stadium selected to host the fifth All-Star game here in Central Islip. According to a Duck's spokesman, the vote by the Atlantic League board of directors awarded Long Island with the game due largely to the success of the Ducks’ franchise. “Bud and I are genuinely excited to host the Atlantic League’s fifth annual All-Star game,” says Frank Boulton, Ducks Principal Owner and Atlantic League CEO. “I believe the league is rewarding us based on our tremendous fan and corporate support in our first two years of operation. We once again would like to thank our fans and sponsors, and we look forward to making the 2002 Atlantic League All-Star Game a special event.” Players in the league's eight teams (see below) are divided between the North All-Stars and the South All-Stars. And for the first time in league history, fans will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite players via an on-line ballot. (Stay tuned to SuffolkJournal.com for details on how to vote for your favorite LI Duck player.) Some Duck's fans are looking forward to a repeat of last year's 10-0 North victory. According to Ducks General Manager Matt O’Brien, the All-Star Game is an event for the fans. “We’re pleased our fans have the opportunity to be a part of the very special event,” says O’Brien. “Rest assured, the bulk of the tickets to the game will be reserved for Long Island Ducks fans.” While it's too early to tell which players will make this year's All-Star team, Duck's officials are confident that not only will the team be well-represented on the field, but their coaching staff will also be part of the team. “The All-Star game has become an important part of the Atlantic League tradition, and we are proud and excited to award it to Long Island,” says Joe Klein, Executive Director of the Atlantic League. “This is a stage for our former major league players, as well as our young talent, to make a name for themselves. We are looking forward to having fun and watching great baseball on July 10.” The special event will also be surrounded by several activities and functions that will allow Long Island baseball fans to enjoy the experience of an All-Star game in their backyard.
