BABYLON, NY --  The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that the Long Island Region, in cooperation with The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association (WWBA), will be hosting a Poetry Workshop and Reading on Sunday, September 30, 2007.  The Workshop will be presented at 9:30 AM – 1:30 PM.  The Reading will commence 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM.

WWBA will salute poet Marie Howe, author of two volumes of poetry, “The Good Thief” (1998), and “What the Living Do” (1997).  Festivities include a Workshop, which will allow writers to break through their resistance and boundaries when writing.  They will leave this workshop more awake possibilities, empowered to write in new ways, carrying pages of new poems.  The reading of poetry by Howe is luminous, intense, and eloquent.  Refreshments will be served at reading.

The event will be held at the Walt Whitman Birthplace, 246 Old Walt Whitman Road, Melville. Tickets for the Workshop are $50 for members, and for applicants to workshops at the Palm Beach Poetry Festival.  Fee for non-members is $60.  Admission is $10 for the Poetry Reading.  For further information, call 631-427-5240 or visit www.waltwhitman.org.  First come first served.  Limit 35 writers.
