RAILROAD
MUSEUM OF
LONG ISLAND ANNOUNCES DEDICATION OF
RESTORED 1927
LIRR
CABOOSE
The Railroad Museum of Long Island is pleased to announce the
dedication of
our recently restored 1927 wooden N52A Long Island Railroad Caboose. The
public is invited to share in the dedication at 2:00 PM on Saturday,
September 21, 2002 at the Museum's Greenport Site, located on 4th Street,
at
the railroad tracks, in Greenport, NY. A ribbon cutting ceremony,
recognition of volunteers and donors and light refreshments will round out
the activities. The caboose will be open to the public for viewing after
the
dedication. The dedication ceremony will coincide with the Greenport Maritime
Festival being held on the 21st and 22nd of September 2002.
This historic railroad caboose was used extensively on the Long Island
Railroad freight system until it was retired in the early 1960's. It was then
shipped to East Haven, Connecticut where it saw service on the Branford
Electric Railway and then as a bunkhouse at the Valley Railroad in Essex,
Connecticut. Upon returning to the Railroad Museum of Long Island in 1997,
museum volunteers have carefully disassembled the wooden caboose, replaced
all of the rotten materials and renovated and restored the car to 1940's
vintage splendor.
