There’s a New Kind of Book Club in Town
For those who love to read and would like the opportunity to discuss their readings with others, but do not like to be told what to read, The Smithtown Library has the perfect book club for them.
Participants in the Genre Book Club, hosted at The Smithtown Library’s Main Building, enjoy the freedom of reading a book title of their own choosing with the only common thread for the group being the type of book or genre. Peggy McCarthy, the Smithtown Librarian who heads up this group, says she is a part of a similar club with fellow librarians. “We have so much fun,” she said, “I thought why not share this with the book-loving public.”
Since the group’s inception in November of 2002, group members have read various titles in Historical Fiction, Coming of Age Novels and Police Procedurals stories.
For the March 15th meeting of the Genre Book Club, members will be reading books that fall in the "Political Thrillers" category, such as Nelson DeMille's Lion's Game or Robert Ludlum's Bourne Identity. Suggested reading lists with additional titles are available at the Reference Desk of the Main Library. Looking ahead to the May 3rd meeting, the group will concentrate on Legal Stories such as John Grisham's The Firm, or Nancy Taylor Rosenberg's Abuse of Power.
The Genre Book Club meets once a month on a Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Main Library in Smithtown. All are welcome to take part in this unique reading and discussion experience. Registration is required for this program; please call Peggy McCarthy at 265-2072 Ext. 220 for sign up or with any questions.
“This opportunity helps promote and encourage the creativity of our students and affords them an arena other than their school building in which to exhibit their work,” said Anne Marie Tognella, Library Program Coordinator, who is organizing this series. “The Library is delighted to facilitate exhibits of this nature on an ongoing basis throughout the current school year as well as in the future.”
The Library will celebrate the continuation of this exhibit series and the students’ accomplishments with an art reception on Monday, February 10 at 5:30 p.m. in the Library Gallery. Community members are invited to come to the reception.
Come with your friends to the Main Building of the Smithtown Library on February 15 at 1:00 p.m. for a Saturday afternoon matinee as we screen Spider-Man. When bitten by a genetically modified spider, nerdy Peter Parker, a high school student who lives with his aunt and uncle in Queens, gains superhuman strength, agility, and perception. Tragedy compels Peter to use his powers to fight crime as his superhero alter ego Spider-Man. Starring Toby Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and Willem Dafoe. Snacks and drinks will be served. Please register at the Circulation Desk or by calling 265-2072 Ext 208.
