Taliban condemn attacks in U.S., deny bin Laden's involvement

The Associated Press - KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) Afghanistan's hardline Taliban rulers condemned the devastating terrorist attacks in New York and Washington on Tuesday and rejected suggestions that Osama bin Laden could be behind them. The Taliban's ambassador to neighboring Pakistan, Abdul Salam Zaeef, said bin Laden, the Saudi dissident who has been given asylum in this troubled nation, does not have the facilities needed to carry out such well-orchestrated attacks. "It is premature to level allegations against a person who is not in a position to carry out such attacks," he said. "It was a well-organized plan and Osama has no such facilities." U.N. sanctions are currently in place against Afghanistan to press the Taliban to hand over bin Laden for trial in connection with the 1998 bombings of two U.S. Embassies in East Africa that killed 224 people. The Taliban, a religious militia, promotes a harsh brand of Islam in the roughly 95 percent of Afghanistan under its control.

Afghan Taliban Say Bin Laden Not Behind U.S. Attacks

KABUL (Reuters) - A spokesman for Afghanistan's ruling Taliban said on Tuesday that Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden could not be responsible for a spate of terror attacks in the United States. "What happened in the United States was not a job of ordinary people. It could have been the work of governments. Osama bin Laden cannot do this work, neither us," Abdul Hai Mutmaen told Reuters from the southern city of Kandahar. "We are not supporting terrorism. Osama does not have the capability. We condemn this. "This could have been the act of either internal enemies of the United States or its major rivals. Osama cannot do this work ...," he added. Two planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York on Tuesday morning and a third into the Pentagon. New York's mayor said many lives had been lost in the attacks, which President Bush called a "terrorist attack."

Palestinian Group Denies World Trade Center Crash

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A senior official from the radical Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine denied Tuesday the group had any connection to a double plane crash onto New York City's World Trade Center. An anonymous caller had told Abu Dhabi television the DFLP was behind the crash. "I emphasize that the story released on Abu Dhabi TV by an anonymous person is totally incorrect," Tayseer Khaled, a senior official from the DFLP politburo in the Palestinian territories, told Reuters. "The DFLP is against hijacking planes and against endangering the lives of civilians who are not connected with the struggle of this region," he said.
