Thousands of Long Islanders stood for up to five hours yesterday to donate life saving blood for the victims of the World Trade Center blast.  But rescue workers stress that the need for blood will last far longer than today's shortages.  They ask instead that people stagger their donations over several days - even weeks - in order to ensure a continual supply.

"This morning Long Island Blood Services was contacted to ascertain if Smithtown employees should donate blood at other area locations rather than waiting until the town's blood drive next week," said Vecchio. "We were told that we could be of most help by donating at our scheduled drive. These donations will be used to meet the continuing need for blood over the weeks and months ahead."

To help meet the needs of additional donors, King Kullen has donated 400 boxed juices and cookies which will be given to donors by Hauppauge High School students who will assist Long Island Blood Services volunteers. Local community groups seeking to set up blood drives have been directed by LIBS to go to the town drive instead.

Suffolk County Executive Robert Gaffney announced today that although LI Blood Services has all the donors it can handle through the weekend, there is still a desperate need for type O and type O Negative blood. Type O Negative is a universal blood type which can be given to anyone without waiting for their own type to be identified.  Therefore it is always in demand.

"Suffolk residents have proven once again that in times of trouble and need, they will be there for their neighbors across the street or across the state; it makes no difference," Gaffney said. Blood donations are being collected across the country, but nowhere faster or more generously than here in Suffolk County.

We will be constantly updating information on any and all blood drives organized by any group.  If you know of a blood drive please let us know so we can share the information.  So far we have the following places and times where blood drives are taking place.

Remember, the need is great and will last longer than just these first critical and emotion filled days.
