September 14, 2001 In the wake of the devastation of New York City's World Trade Center dozens of local businesses and organizations are volunteering their support and assistance to the thousands of emergency workers on the scene. The Hauppauge Industrial Association is helping to coordinate the efforts of Liberty Moving and Storage which is donating some of its trucks to transport relief supplies to rescue workers in Manhattan. All 800 HIA members have received email messages asking them to participate if they are able. "Liberty Moving & Storage will continue to deliver items today, tomorrow and until people stop bringing donations to their location, said Marcy Tublisky, Executive Director of the HIA. "Everyone's generosity is overwhelming. They are asking for food, t-shirts, socks, water, Gatorade, digging supplies, toothbrushes, etc." Donated supplies for this drive should be brought to: Liberty Moving & Storage 17 Central Ave., Hauppauge Phone: 631-234-3000 LIE to Exit 56 (Route 111). The Huntington Chamber of Commerce has enhanced its website with links to sites offering information and assistance. The Kings Park Chamber of Commerce is also arranging a relief supplies program, gathering, food, bottled water and energy drinks, T-shirts, sweatpants and socks for delivery to the rescue workers in Manhattan. Plycon Trucking is providing the transportation. Drop off points for those donations have not yet been announced but people who have items to donate should call the Chamber. "We can't just sit back and watch others work," said Elaine Turley, former president of the chamber and one of the organizers of the drive. "We can give blood and we can give these needed supplies. These are our friends and neighbors. It is the least we can do considering their sacrifice." Many other companies and individuals are also coming forward with donations and fundraising efforts demonstrating the massive generosity and spirit of Long Islanders and Americans. KeySpan has announced a $100,000 to the American Red Cross for the relief effort and a matching gifts program for its 13,000 employees which will double, up to a total of $500,000 any employee contributions to either the Red Cross or Salvation Army. KeySpan has also sent 17,000 tee shirts to the Salvation Army staging area headquarters in New York City. KeySpan has already opened its blood drive to allow the public to participate (see related) and released numerous workers who serve as Volunteer Firemen and EMT's. The company said five diesel tanker trucks are prepared and ready to roll to provide refueling for either generators or emergency vehicles and items such as respirators, goggles and gloves for the New York City Command Center. Finally, the company is preparing to support Con Edison's demands for gas and electric and is inventorying its office space in order to provide temporary offices for displaced businesses. Although these programs are being coordinated by several independent groups, most of the materials will be given to the official rescue service agencies such as the American Red Cross or Salvation Army for distribution to the recovery sites.
