What is the Federal Government Doing?

  • More than 2,100 Federal personnel are deployed in response to these incidents

  • FEMA Emergency Support Team fully activated and a liaison deployed to FBI's Strategic Information and Operations Center

  • An Emergency Response Team deployed for operations in New York

  • Mobilization Centers established in New York and New Jersey for arriving personnel and equipment

Communications:

  • FEMA teams working with New York City police to augment communications at 1 Police Plaza, NYC

  • Verizon is dispatching 2-man teams to 1 Police Plaza

Public Works:

  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has deployed a planning cell specializing in debris removal to NYC

  • USACE structural assessment teams standing by 

  • Elements of the Prime Power unit are deployed to NY for potential emergency power assistance

Mass Care:

  • American Red Cross (ARC) is coordinating air transportation of blood products to NYC and establishing a welfare inquiry line for family inquiries regarding victims

  • All ARC collection sites will continue around the clock

  • Fifteen shelters opened in NJ with capacity of 70

  • Twelve shelters opened in NYC

  • Ten Emergency Response Vehicles deployed to affected area in NYC with additional 11 en route

  • Urban Search and Rescue:

  • Twelve Urban Search and Rescue task forces and an Incident Support Team deployed to NYC. 

  • Eight task forces on the scene with four more awaiting transport

Hazardous Materials:

  • Environmental Protection Agency, Regions II and III working to address potential air quality issues resulting from release of asbestos from all affected buildings

  • Region II personnel taking samples of ash from WTC to analyze

Transportation:

  • FAA closed NY airports till at least 3:00 p.m. Wednesday
