New York State Assemblymen Fred Thiele (R-Sag Harbor) and James Tedisco (R-Schenectady) have sponsored state legislation to create a "Freedom Stands Tall" custom license plate to commemorate the victims and heroes of the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. The measure is also sponsored in
the state Senate by Senator Michael Nozzolio (R-Seneca Falls).
The proposed plate's graphics include a representation of the twin towers in the background with a large ribbon/bow
(like the one depicted in our headline) decorated in stars and stripes superimposed between the towers in the foreground over a smaller city skyline. The motto "Freedom Stands Tall" would appear under the letters or numbers assigned to the plate.
If the legislation passes, the license plate would cost $34.50. The annual $25 fee would be deposited into a special account established in the Crime Victims Compensation Fund for victims of the World Trade Center tragedy.
Thiele said, "The creation of the 'Freedom Stands Tall' license plate provides us with a tangible way to honor the heroes and victims of September 11, while at the same time providing New Yorkers with another way to assist victims of the tragedy. Every dollar of the $25 fee will go to help victims directly. Finally, this
plate will provide all of us with a reminder of why we must prosecute the war on terrorism to a successful conclusion."
