Over 2,000 motorcycles from across LI gathered at
Suffolk County's H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge, raising over
$20,000 to aid victims of the attack in New York. The word spread
through biker clubs, the internet and radio stations across the Island.
Organized
by Bob Turner, within only a few days, riders came in groups, from clubs and and alone in
response to the call. Because of the number of bikers, Suffolk
Police asked them to revise their planned route to the Viet Nam Veterans
Memorial at Bald Hill by using Northern State Parkway for the western leg
of the trip.
For
over two hours they stood on line to register, each donating $10 toward
the fund. At 8 p.m. they were given the route - Northern State to
Route 110 to Sunrise Highway to Route 83 to the Memorial - passing through
each of the five western towns.
It took less than
half an hour for all the cycles to exit onto Veterans Memorial Highway as
the streams of motorcycles merged from three lanes. Other motorists
waited patiently for the motorcade to pass through the light.
While deafening, the sound of all those bikes and
horns was also inspiring. Nearly every one was carrying an American
Flag.
