September 6, 2007 SMITHTOWN, NY -- New York State Senator John Flanagan (R,I,C, -Northport) and Smithtown Town Councilman Edward Wehrheim met with the Smithtown Fire Chief's Council to announce the securing of over $80,000 to offset the cost of two projects that the council had set as important priorities. The two officials worked jointly to obtain the funding. Smithtown Councilman Edward Wehrheim (far left) and Senator John Flanagan (far right) join members of the Smithtown Fire Chiefs Council after announcing the success of joint efforts to obtain major funding for satellite phones and improvements at the Firematic Training Center. The first project involves emergency communications. Some $35,000 will be used to purchase and install satellite phones, which allow for better and more consistent communication in emergencies where catastrophic event may damage or disable regular communication systems. According to the Chiefs, the phones increase the effectiveness of communication between departments and allow them to better serve the community and the residents. A portion of the remaining funds will be used by the council to install a much-needed rest room facility at the Edward Mankuski Firematic Training Center on Middle Country Road in Smithtown. This OSHA-certified bathroom will provide some convenience to the emergency personnel while they train to protect the residents of Smithtown. "I am pleased to be able to provide assistance to our Smithtown firefighters. Their service is vital to the safety of our residents," said Councilman Wehrheim. "I also thank Senator Flanagan for his continued efforts in supporting the Smithtown community," he added. "The service that these departments provide to our community deserve our praise and, more importantly, our continued support,” declared Senator Flanagan. “I am proud to assist the Smithtown Fire Chief's Council in their efforts and I look forward to working with them in the future. I also want to thank all the volunteer firefighters this council represents for all they do for our community and for the sacrifice they make," Flanagan concluded. The Smithtown Fire Chief's Council brings together the seven departments that serve the Town of Smithtown. The Council, which was organized in 1952, is made up of representatives from fire departments serving the areas of Commack, Hauppauge, Kings Park, Nesconset, Nissequogue, Smithtown, and St. James. -30- Click
