Although historically it has been mired with weather calamities - tornadoes, hurricanes the "Year of Mud" -   this year riders couldn't have had a more beautiful day for the opening of the 26th Annual Hampton Classic Horse Show yesterday in Bridgehampton. With nary a cloud in the sky, the youngest riders were put through their paces in the prestigious competition.

The week-long event features local equestrians, up-and-coming riders, Olympic veterans and world class competitors.  An estimated 1,400 horses will show by the time the Classic ends next Sunday, competing for a total of $500,000 in prize money. The overall economic impact to Long Island as a result of this show is more than $10 million.

At this year's opening, Nona Garson, a member of the 2000 USA Team at the Sydney Olympics was on hand to offer her support to the young riders in the competition, calling the event, "one of the best horse shows I have ever seen."

Children and adults alike can get an "up close and personal" view of the riders and their steeds, their costumes and equipment.  There is a day dedicated to seniors, a Fiesta Day filled with Latin music and food, and a Kid's Day where children under 12 are admitted free and receive a complimentary pony ride. For the more commercially-minded, there is an enormous boutique area offering a wide array of items and food that could be difficult to find elsewhere.

Say you've never been to a horse show?  You don't know the difference between hunters and jumpers, a clean round or a combination?  Take the time to learn at the Hampton Classic.  There is no other place like it.
