The crisp fall day kept the flags at Armed Forces Plaza unfurled as County officials joined Veterans to
dedicate the County's World War II monument, November 9.
A drum roll kept beat as Patriotic music provided by the Rocky Point H.S. Band played for the gathering of Veterans, civilians and active duty service personnel. U.S. Navy Veteran and Co-Chair of the Monument Design Commission, Virginia Jacques cut the ribbon.
A
memorial stone at the entrance to the courtyard bears a plaque with the
inscription, "dedicated to the men and women of Suffolk County who
bravely served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America during
World War II in recognition of the sacrifices they made for the defense of
freedom for all mankind."
Present at the ceremony was Smithtown veteran and former P.O.W. James Dowling, whose story was among those featured in Tom
Brokaw's "The Greatest Generation," and Col. Herbert J. Budnick, U.S.A. Ret.
"This monument is for you and for your comrades who are no longer with us," Chief Deputy County Executive Eric
Kopp told the veterans assembled on the courtyard.
The monument, a circular flat map of the globe, is encircled by bronze
plaques describing major military events and milestones from the war period. As you walk around the circumference you are taken along a timeline.
The entire monument is wrapped in a courtyard of benches with a planted berm separating it from the rest of the plaza.
The event kicked off a four day celebration of Veterans Day in Suffolk County. See the calendar for more scheduled events.
